Last night’s episode of ‘Lovecraft Country’ on HBO took the weirdness to a surreal level again. Only this time it wasn’t exactly a dream.
Surviving the shoggoth’s in the woods the night before and finding a mysterious mansion where they were expected was strange enough. Now it seems that only Atticus remembers the events of the night before while his companions have partial amnesia.
Exploring the small village nearby they find a strange stone tower and unfriendly villagers with mean dogs. Atticus and his uncle George quickly feel like Atticus’ father Montrose may be held prisoner underneath the tower and resolve to come back and rescue him. They get back a little late as Montrose has dug a tunnel and escaped on his own. They meet and attempt a getaway but are stopped by the white witch Christina Braithwhite.
With two companions fatally wounded Atticus makes a deal with Christina’s father to participate in a strange ceremony for a cult called the ‘Sons of Adam’.
This episode is a much lighter on the serious subject matter and focuses more on the general weirdness of the situation. There are strange dreamlike hallucinations that the characters interact with that’s really the standout of the episode while hinting at a deeper story behind Atticus’ time in Korea.
It is revealed that Abbey Lee’s character is a witch and her father the leader of a cult with definite magic powers.
Lots of characters seemingly meet their end but I have a feeling we’ll be seeing more of them in future episodes.
I love how weird this show is willing to go but the cgi effects this episode weren’t great. The cast is still fantastic with the added addition of Michael Kenneth Williams as Montrose.
This second episode of the series doesn’t have the same impact as the premiere episode but hopefully the show can make up for it next week. Until then I’ll keep watching.
