The 72nd Emmy Awards aired Sunday night in a mostly live yet remote format. Host Jimmy Kimmel made the usual mixed bag of jokes with a standout gag involving Jennifer Aniston and a fire threatening to get out of control.
Canadian comedy ‘Schitt’s Creek’ swept the comedy series category with the exception of the guest performers that both went to Saturday Night Live, including Eddie Murphy.
The drama category was dominated by ‘Succession’ winning 5 while Zendaya made history as the youngest performer to win Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series at the age of 24.
‘Watchmen’ likewise dominated the Limited Series or Television Movie category even though Jovan Adepo lost to his castmate.
‘Better Call Saul Employee Training: Legal Ethics with Kim Wexler’ won the Emmy for Outstanding Short Form Comedy or Drama Series.
‘Rick and Morty: The Vat of Acid Episode’ won for Outstanding Animated Program.
Virtual reality received its own categories as Interactive Programming.
‘The Messy Truth in VR’, produced by Brie Larson and Van Jones, won Outstanding Original Interactive Program.
Outstanding Interactive Extension of a Linear Program was awarded to ‘Mr. Robot: Season_4.0 ARG’.
Outstanding Derivative Interactive Program went to ‘Big Mouth Guide to Life’.
A juried award for Outstanding Innovation in Interactive Media went to both ‘Create Together’ (executive produced by Joseph Gordon-Levitt), and ‘The Line’.
