The weekend before the Thanksgiving holiday saw theaters struggling to survive in the wake of the global coronavirus pandemic. Kevin Costner’s neo-western fell into third place behind Robert DeNiro’s family film. Audiences seem to favor the more light hearted offerings as horror comedy stays number one and a holiday family film from 1994 starring Tim Allen rounds out the Weekend Box Office Top 5.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (November 20-22, 2020)
- ‘Freaky’ – $1.3 million – horror comedy (dropping 2.4 million, 65% decline)
- ‘War with Grandpa’ – $747k – family (dropping 600k, 46% decline)
- ‘Let Him Go’ – $724k – western (dropping 1.1 million, 61% decline)
- ‘Come Play’ – $562k – horror (dropping 600k, 55% decline)
- ‘The Santa Clause’ – $461k – family (debut re-release)
The weekend total stands approximately at $3.8 million, dropping $4.9 million for a 56% decline from last weekend’s total of $8.7 million.
With new films losing 50% or more over the weekend there is little good news for theaters in the foreseeable future. Next weekend, being a longer holiday weekend with the new release of ‘The Croods: A New Age’, the sequel to the previous animated hit ‘The Croods’, theaters are expected to see a modest uptick in revenue. However, with the news coming that Christmas release of ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ being available day-and-date for home viewing theaters will be lucky to survive out the year.
