The sequel to John Krasinski’s popular sci-fi horror film has reclaimed the number one spot on the Weekend Box Office Top 5.

Available to see in theaters only, ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ starring Emily Blunt pulls ahead of highly anticipated new releases ‘In the Heights’ and ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’.

Lin-Manuel Miranda’s underwhelming adaptation of his Broadway play was delayed from last year due to the pandemic. The buzz and publicity for the film managed to keep going through the lockdown but was not enough to sway audiences into cinemas. It was also undoubtedly affected by being a day-and-date release on HBO Max.

Other day-and-date releases continue to see their box office numbers decline.

Last weekend’s top winner, ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ falls to fourth place in its second weekend. Streaming on HBO Max it continues what is quickly becoming a tradition for the streaming service, one decent weekend followed by rapidly declining box office receipts.

Overall, it wasn’t that bad of a weekend for theaters. The box office saw only a modest 19% decline bringing in a total of $50.2 million. That is down $11.6 million from last weekends total of $61.8 million.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (June 11-13, 2021)

  1. ‘A Quiet Place Part II’ – $11.7 million – horror (drop $7.6 million, 39% decline)
  2. ‘In the Heights’ – $11.4 million – musical (debut)
  3. ‘Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway’ – $10.4 million – animated (debut)
  4. ‘The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It’ – $10 million – horror (drop $14.1 million, 59% decline)
  5. ‘Cruella’ – $6.7 million – family (drop $4.2 million, 39% decline)

One or two of these titles will be dropping off the Top 5 as this Wednesday will see the release of the Ryan Reynolds/Samuel L. Jackson comedy ‘The Hitman’s Wife’s Bodyguard’ with Salma Hayek expected to take the top spot with a five day take over a slew of limited releases on Friday, which includes the Edgar Wright directed music documentary ‘The Sparks Brothers’.

Then the following weekend of June 25 the latest Vin Diesel franchise installment ‘F9: The Fast Saga’ hits theaters, though it hasn’t done too well in China where it was released over a week ago, bad reviews kept it from hitting the highs of previous installments.

Horror fans may be interested to know that ‘Werewolves Within’ will be enjoying a limited release that same weekend. The comedic horror film is based on the video game and stars Milana Vayntrub (best known for her AT&T commercials) and Cheyenne Jackson (from the hit tv series ‘American Horror Story’).
