After a script for the pilot episode of the upcoming CW show ‘Powerpuff’ leaked online earlier this summer sending the pilot episode into reshoots, more bad news hits the production today.
As Variety reported just hours ago, Chloe Bennet, the star best known for playing Quake on ABC’s ‘Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’, has now exited the lead role of Blossom in the CW’s live action take based on Craig McCraken’s original cartoon series. As the pilot episode of ‘Powerpuff’ was scrapped from airing later this year to allow for a reshot pilot to hit the network early 2022, scheduling conflicts naturally have presented themselves.
The scheduling conflicts so far only involve Chloe Bennet. No official word has yet been made as to what other projects may be the cause of preventing one of ‘Powerpuff’s main leads to exit, but it is strongly rumored that Chloe Bennet may be returning to her Marvel role of Quake for the already announced Disney+ series ‘Secret Invasion’. That series is already being set up in the MCU with post-credit scenes in ‘Spider-Man: Far From Home’ and the recent Disney+ series ‘The Falcon and the Winter Soldier’.
As the Disney/Marvel brand continues to be the dominant force in Hollywood on screens large and small, it is probably for the best if it is true that Chloe Bennet is returning to the role that made her a fan favorite and burgeoning star. ‘Powerpuff’ on the other hand, while always going to be a challenge to make a live-action version of the iconic cartoon series, appeared to everyone who caught wind of the leaked script as a production clearly in trouble. The leaked script really reads like bad fan-fiction, though even fan-fiction has been made into successful productions, most notably ’50 Shades of Gray’.
‘Powerpuff’ is still, so far, in production on reshoots. Other top cast members, Dove Cameron as Bubbles and Yana Perrault as Buttercup, are still attached to the project. Dove Cameron is unlikely to leave the project unless it’s put on ice for good as she has actively campaigned for the role of Bubbles for years if any live-action version were ever to be made. Dove Cameron appeared previously alongside Chloe Bennet on ‘Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.’ where Cameron played a memorable and surprisingly very formidable villain.
‘Powerpuff’ is being produced for the CW network by Greg Berlanti, who produces most all of the DC comic adaptations that appear on the CW. ‘Powerpuff’ is being written by Oscar winning screenwriter Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier.
