It’s a weekend of fantasy and animation. ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ boosts the Weekend Box Office Top 5 up 340%.

Summoning up an astonishing $187.4 million, ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ becomes 2022’s biggest debut yet. That’s nearly $53 million more than the weekend debut of ‘The Batman’ just months ago.

Directed by horror maestro Sam Raimi the Marvel fantasy stars Benedict Cumberbatch as the Sorcerer Supreme. The film also features BD Wong and Elizabeth Olsen, reprising her role as the Scarlet Witch. Joining the mad, multiversal fun is Xochitl Gomez as dimension hopping America Chavez. The film also officially brings the Fantastic Four and the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Patrick Stewart reprises his role as Professor X and John Krasinski makes many a fans dream-casting come true as Mister Fantastic. There is much more in the film, including Bruce Campbell in a humorous homage to Raimi’s ‘Evil Dead’ films which starred Campbell.

Animation still holds on to audiences. Previous box office winner, ‘The Bad Guys’, naturally drops into second as good guy, ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’, drops into third.

Fantasy comes back to round out the Weekend Box Office Top 5. ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ conjures into fourth as multiverse comedy, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ sticks at fifth. The Michelle Yeoh starring fantasy-comedy is this years’ sleeper hit becoming one of the most notable films of 2022.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ will stay safely atop the Weekend Box Office Top 5 for the next few weeks. Memorial Day weekend will bring the first real test against ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, May 27.

  2. ‘The Bad Guys’ – $9.6 million – animated (drop $6.6 million, 41% down)
  3. ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ – $6 million – animated (drop $5.5 million, 48% down)
  4. ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ – $4.3 million – fantasy (drop $4 million, 48% down)
  5. ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ – $3.5 million – comedy (drop $2 million, 36% down)

Total for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 is $210.8 million. This is a 340% increase for a gain of $162.9 million over last weekend’s total of $47.9 million.
