Last weekend brought the four-day holiday box office to theaters. Labor Day weekend was very lackluster, with no new titles making a dent. It did see the re-release of ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ which brought some confusion to box office reporters across the industry.
Normally, outlets such as Variety or the Hollywood Reporter report weekend estimates instead of hard numbers. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ did quite well Friday and Saturday leading trade papers to claim it to take number one at theaters.
However, according to numbers posted by Box Office Mojo, the web-slinging fantasy didn’t even crack the top 5 on Sunday. Still, the trades printed estimates again, revising the Marvel film as taking third place.
The numbers were still wrong.
Ultimately, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ came in at fourth place with a four-day total of $6.5 million.
The big winner over the holiday timeframe was ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ with $7.9 million.
The remainder of September looks to be incredibly slow and dull at the box office. October should bring some relief as Dwayne Johnson brings DC supervillain ‘Black Adam’ to the screen. However, it’s interesting to note, that most trade papers aren’t expecting real relief at the box office until Marvel’s ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ releases in November.
