It’s a no-brainer November as superheroes continuously top the box office. ‘Black Adam’ rules for a third consecutive weekend with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ waiting in the wings.
Starring Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, ‘Black Adam’ has defied lackluster critical reception and has flown up to over $300 million worldwide. Like most superhero films, ‘Black Adam’ is enjoying box office victory in spite of mediocre reviews. With $18.3 million this weekend it is easily double than the unexpected second place movie.
Animation is still quietly strong genre favorite of audiences.
From Toei Studios in Japan, ‘One Piece Film: Red’ has become the latest animated film to be a hit in theaters. Drawing up $9.3 million for a solid second place at the box office, ‘One Piece Film: Red’ proves once again the sustainable popularity of animation.
Romance in the middle.
‘Ticket to Paradise’, the romantic comedy starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney, experienced a slow slide down of 15%. The success of ‘Ticket to Paradise’ can be seen as a potential way forward for Hollywood out of the comic book superhero haze. Romantic comedy is due to flow back into popularity, as is comedy. Even better, the comedy of rom-coms tends to be more favorable to a large cross-section of audience demographics. The fact this film stars two of Hollywood’s biggest names may also indicate a potential return of star power to the silver screen.
But with ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ due out Friday, it’s going to be awhile before that tide turns.
Horror in the basement (of the Weekend Box Office Top 5).
‘Smile’, starring Sosie Bacon, made some cheddar with $4 million over the weekend. That puts it approximately $100k ahead of the other horror film, ‘Prey for the Devil’. That exorcist fright fest scared up $3.9 million, a 44% decline in its sophomore weekend.
Next weekend, and likely for the rest of the month, the box office will be black on black. ‘Black Adam’ will stick around but ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ will make over $100 million on its own.
