So Far: ‘Lovecraft Country – Episode 4: History of Violence’

Best episode yet.

Heavily influenced by ‘Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade’, this week’s episode adds more humor than previously. Atticus, Leti and Montrose take a few unexpected guests along to Boston for an exciting MacGuffin hunt. Their hunt leads them into strange tunnels below a natural history museum filled with corpses and water.

Back in Chicago Leti’s sister Ruby gets depressed over not having a better job. The white warlock appears at the bar where she is singing and offers to change her life. Needless to say she takes him up on the offer.

Filled with more action than the first three episodes there is still some character development here. Atticus’ mother may know more about what’s going on giving her added dimension. With Ruby hooking up with a bad guy it’s starting to look like battle lines are being drawn up for a possible magic filled showdown.

The soundtrack which has been excellent since the premiere gets pushed more to the forefront this time around. The production design also stands out more with a weird twist on the pit and the pendulum idea. The show also makes clever use of gore specifically with a severed arm.

‘Lovecraft Country’ is really delivering on its promise to move the horror genre forward in regards to representation. So far it’s great fun and exciting to see what happens from week to week. If you haven’t watched it yet you’re missing out.
