The first major film festival to have a physical event since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic the Venice Film Festival supplemented with holding some events virtually such as the film buyers market and some award celebrations.
As ‘Nomadland’ took the Golden Lion the festival also celebrated new horizons in film for which they give the Orizzonti (Horizons) awards. This year an Iranian drama about a bricklayer trying to protect the woman he loves as he must inform his coworkers of the factory shutting down took the prize for best film.
The Orizzonti Award winners are as follows:
Best Film – ‘The Wasteland’, Ahmad Bahrami (Iran)
Best Director – ‘Genus Pan’, Lav Diaz (Philippines)
Special Jury Prize – ‘Listen’, Ana Rocha de Sousa (Portugal/UK)
Best Actress – ‘Zanka Contact’, Khansa Batma (France/Morocco/Belgium)
Best Actor – ‘The Man Who Sold His Skin’, Yahya Mahayni (Tunisia/France/Belgium/Germany/Sweden)
Best Screenplay – ‘The Predators’, Pietro Castellitto (Italy)
Best Short Film – ‘Entre tu y Milagros’, Mariana Saffon (Columbia/USA)
Lion of the Future “Luigi de Laurentiis” Award for Debut Film – ‘Listen’, Ana Rocha de Sousa (Portugal/UK)
