No new major releases as Hollywood gives up on U.S. domestic box office for remainder of the year. A reissue of the classic science fiction action-adventure ‘Star Wars – Episode 5: The Empire Strikes Back’, inspired by serial cliffhangers, makes a strong showing on a reissue after 40 years since its original release in 1980.
The weekend box office is dominated with sci-fi fantasy in three of the top spots as action-adventure fills out the remainder.
WEEKEND TOP 5 (September 25-27, 2020)
- ‘Tenet’ – $3.4 million – science fiction (dropping 1.3 million for 28% decline)
- ‘The New Mutants’ – $1.1 million – fantasy (dropping 700k for 39% decline)
- ‘Unhinged’ – $900k – action-adventure (dropping 400k for 31% decline)
- ‘Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back’ – $900k – science fiction (rerelease)
- ‘Infidel’ – $700k – action-adventure (dropping 700k for 50% decline)
The top two spots are consecutively held by Christopher Nolan’s epic film and the X-Men spinoff for the whole month of September.
The Russell Crow road rage thriller, though taking 31% hit, rises from last week’s fourth place to take third place.
Jim Caviezel starring middle east adventure falls from third to fifth place with the biggest decline from last weekend.
It continues to look grim for theaters with no major releases planned until the holidays. Perhaps the BTS concert film ‘Break the Silence’ can repeat its global success when it gets released stateside. K-Pop fans may provide much needed relief for struggling cinemas.
