More theaters from Regal and Cineworld are closing down again for the remainder of the year. Christopher Nolan’s mind-boggling ‘Tenet’ remains number one at weekend box office. Along with other holdovers the only new appearance in the weekend top five is a re-release of Halloween comedy ‘Hocus Pocus’ which has become quite the cult movie over the decades since originally released.
BOX OFFICE WEEKEND TOP FIVE (October 2-4, 2020)
- ‘Tenet’ – $2.7 million – science fiction – (dropping 700k for 21% decline)
- ‘Hocus Pocus’ – $1.9 million – comedy cult movie – (re-release)
- ‘The New Mutants’ – $1 million – fantasy – (dropping 100k for 9% decline)
- ‘Unhinged’ – $800k – action-adventure – (dropping 100k for 11% decline)
- ‘Infidel’ – $400k – action-adventure – (dropping 300k for 43% decline)
Overall the weekend box office total is at $6.8 million, down $200k from last weekend’s $7 million, for a comfortable 3% decline.
As ‘Dune’, ‘No Time to Die’, ‘Black Widow’ and other major releases get delayed into 2021 and theaters re-close due to the deadly Covid-19 virus it remains an extremely bleak outlook for the future of cinema.
