The weekend box office has a new champion at number 1 this week. New family film starring Robert De Niro, ‘War with Grandpa’, debuts knocking out Christopher Nolan’s ‘Tenet’ which previously held the top spot for five weeks.
‘The New Mutants’ continues to hold on to a spot in the top five after seven weeks with ‘Unhinged’ holding on for two months.
Filling out the top five is a re-release of 1993 comedy ‘Hocus Pocus’ dropping one spot on the list after taking second place last weekend.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE (October 9-11, 2020)
- ‘War with Grandpa’ – $3.6 million – family film (debut)
- ‘Tenet’ – $2.1 million – science fiction (dropping 600k for 22% decline)
- ‘Hocus Pocus’ – $1.1 million – cult movie/comedy (dropping 800k for 42% decline)
- ‘The New Mutants’ – $600k – fantasy (dropping 400k for 40% decline)
- ‘Unhinged’ – $600k – action (dropping 200k for 25% decline)
The total for the Top Five Weekend Box Office is $7 million. It is a gain of $200k over last weekend for a 3% increase, gaining back the 3% drop of last weekend.
With a family film and the family friendly Halloween movie mixing in with the more action oriented films it looks like audiences are hungry for the holiday season at the box office. If only Hollywood would release another couple of big movies to hold back the tide running against cinemas.
