Born on May 18, 1947 in Kashmir, India Hugh Keays-Byrne moved to Australia in 1973 and entered show business starting out like many actors in small roles on television. He made his feature film debut in the 1974 Australian biker film, ‘Stone’ a movie that would be a major influence on the action sci-fi films he would become most known for.

After appearing in the outback western ‘Mad Dog Morgan’ starring Dennis Hopper in 1974, Keays-Byrne made his first iconic screen appearance as the deranged villain of the dystopian future of ‘Mad Max’ in 1979.

As a working actor by the time 1980 rolled around, Keays-Byrne had a regular role as a bad guy on the Australian children’s television show ‘Secret Valley’.

In 1986 he played the eponymous character in the historical political drama, ‘Kangaroo’.

Returning to the science fiction genre and more dystopian future for 1989’s ‘The Blood of Heroes’ starring Rutger Hauer, Keays-Byrne followed this with his directorial effort ‘Resistance’ in 1992, a futuristic action film mixed with heavy political themes.

Never straying from television for very long he had roles in notable television mini-series such as ‘Moby Dick’ in 1998 and ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’ in 1999.

In 2000, Keays-Byrne played the role of Grunchlk on the popular science fiction, space opera, television series ‘Farscape’.

His final screen role came in 2015 when he returned to director George Miller’s dystopian diesel punk future to play the iconic role of Immortan Joe, the main villain, in ‘Mad Max: Fury Road’.

Hugh Keays-Byrne passed away on December 1, 2020 at age 73. No cause of death has been released.
