Genndy Tartakovsky’s ‘Primal – Episode 4: Terror Under the Blood Moon’

Opening with our heroes Spear and Fang being chased by a stampede of ravenous raptors immediately sets the tone for this action packed episode. Just when it seems our heroes have reached the end as the Sun sets, they discover the raptors have a fear of the dark.

The landscape Spear and Fang find themselves at is barren, sparsely littered with mysterious monoliths made of skulls. Cautiously wandering onward they quickly feel the eyes of the unseen watching them. Suddenly someone bursts out carrying the spoils of a hunt. Emerging from the rocks are more of the slightly less developed humans as they urge their compatriot towards safety.

Before the hunter can make it he trips, injuring himself. Spear senses the impending danger and makes a dash to help just as a giant bat creature soars by in the sky. The primitive people are not the type to volunteer to help Spear as he finds himself cornered while more giant bat creatures arrive.

Fang must then figure out how to rescue her companion after she witnesses the bat creatures carry Spear to the top of a plateau. Unable to climb the side of the plateau, Fang fearlessly devises an ingenious way of getting to the top of the tall plateau.

Fang finds that the giant bat creatures aren’t the only threat at the top, there’s also a giant spider that has made its home inside a cave. As Fang tussles the giant spider the bat creatures come home en masse before the rising Sun. Naturally a battle ensues mirroring the combat that opened the episode.

Red is a very important color throughout the series but in ‘Terror Under the Blood Moon’ it becomes even more important. Red is used as the color indicating evil, the more red a character is the more evil that character is.

The artwork, as always, is fantastic with the giant bat creatures being some of the coolest looking characters in the series. Great use of shading enhances the effect of not only the bat creatures but the giant spider as well.
