Dan Harmon, creator of the hit animated series ‘Rick and Morty’, is working on a new cartoon series.
The new animated series, ordered by Fox making it one of the company’s only wholly owned scripted series, is expected to take place in ancient Greece. The mixture of an ancient setting and the outrageous humor of ‘Rick and Morty’ should set the series apart from the multitude of animated competition ordered by numerous networks during the coronavirus pandemic.
Voice casting is happening now. The series began production back in June and is scheduled to premiere in early 2022.
The plotline for the new animated series is said to involve humans, gods and monsters struggling to live together in the time of early civilization.
An ancient setting for a cartoon series is not a new concept. Hanna-Barbera made the classic primetime cartoon, ‘The Flintstones’ in the 1960’s which took place during a modernized caveman setting. The success of ‘The Flintstones’ led to various spinoffs, including Hanna-Barbera’s future set ‘The Jetsons’ and a short live Saturday morning cartoon series from late 1972, ‘The Roman Holidays’, which took place in ancient Rome.
