The popular space western video game franchise, ‘Borderlands’ is getting the major motion picture adaptation.

Lionsgate has tapped Eli Roth to direct the feature. Roth, known for his breakout hits ‘Cabin Fever’ and ‘Hostel’, should be a good choice to balance the video games humor with over-the-top violence and probable gore that the film will include.

Jack Black recently signed on for the role of Claptrap, the comic relief robot. Black is joining a cast that already includes Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis.

The screenplay is being penned by Craig Mazin, who recently had success with the HBO miniseries ‘Chernobyl’.

‘Borderlands’ is based on the popular fps/role playing game that originally released in 2009. The story takes place on the planet Pandora where vault hunters search for relics and other treasures.

The film is being produced by Arad Productions and Picturestar, with Avi and Ari Arad producing for their banner and Erik Feig for Picturestar. The founder of Gearbox Entertainment and executive producer of the game, Randy Pitchford is executive producing the film along with Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take Two Interactive.

The production teams also include James Myers and Aaron Edmonds for Lionsgate, Emmy Yu for Arad Productions, and Lucy Kitada and Royce Reeves-Darby for Picturestar.

Filming is yet to commence and a release date has not been announced.
