The weekend was noticeably lax at the box office with the new release of awards contender ‘Nomadland’ ultimately landing outside the weekend box office, coming in at 7th place. Rumors still circulate around the potential for release date changes for upcoming tentpole films, ‘Black Widow’ and ‘Fast and Furious 9’. There should be definite decisions made on those films this week, it would help the studios in promoting them during the upcoming film award telecasts of both the Golden Globes and the SAG awards.
Three Golden Globe nominated films top the Weekend Box Office Top 5. ‘The Croods: A New Age’, nominated for Best Animated Feature, holds the #1 spot for a second consecutive weekend after returning to the top spot last weekend. This marks its fifth weekend in the top spot after 13 weeks of release. It is the best indicator that audiences will return to theaters when given the chance as the film has been available for streaming since mid-December.
‘The Little Things’, nominated for the performance of Jared Leto in the Supporting Actor category, returns to the second spot ahead of ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ which also has a nomination in the Supporting Actor category for Daniel Kaluuya. Both actors are also up for the SAG award in the same category.
SAG award nominee for Best Stunt Ensemble, ‘Wonder Woman 1984’ takes fourth place just in front of the Liam Neeson action flick, ‘The Marksman’.
Next weekend will see the day-and-date release of ‘Tom and Jerry’. Will the classic cartoon duo be able to knock down the Croods?
