The animated/live action hybrid ‘Tom and Jerry’, a day-and-date release on HBO Max, takes the top spot as expected at the weekend box office, dominating with $13.7 million. ‘The Croods: A New Age’ follows in second place with just over $1 million. The two animated hits are the only films this weekend to make more than a million dollars.
The drama ‘Judas and the Black Messiah’ drops out of the Top 5 altogether in spite of winning a Golden Globe for Daniel Kaluuya in the Supporting Actor category last night, beating out Jared Leto who was nominated for ‘The Little Things’. Golden Globe winner for Best Picture and Director, ‘Nomadland’ falls just outside of the Top 5, coming in at sixth place.
‘The Croods: A New Age’ is currently the top money maker in the domestic box office for 2021 with just over $20 million. It lost the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature to Pixar’s ‘Soul’ which debuted on Disney+ last year, never making it into the Weekend Box Office Top 5.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (February 26-28, 2021)
- ‘Tom and Jerry’ – $13.7 million – animation (debut)
- ‘The Croods: A New Age’ – $1.2 million – animation (drop $500k, 29% decline)

The total for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 comes to $17.2 million for a gain of $11.9 million over last weekends total of $5.3 million, an increase of 225%.
Next weekend should see a more competitive box office with a couple of day-and-date releases that should attract audiences.
The sci-fi film ‘Chaos Walking’, starring Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland, will open opposite the Disney Animation Studios contender, ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ starring Awkwafina.
