‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ Reigns Supreme at Weekend Box Office

The weekend box office was down a little over the last few days as the show business community celebrated the Grammy Awards where Billie Eilish took home the top prize of Record of the Year for “Everything I Wanted”, a consecutive for Eilish who won Record fo the Year for “Bad Guy” last year. Eilish also won the Grammy for Best Song for Visual Media for her recording of the next theme song for the upcoming 007 James Bond adventure, ‘No Time to Die’.

Hollywood is also bracing for the announcement of Oscar nominations happening early Monday morning!

Overall, the box office saw the same films from last weekend maintain their positions in the Weekend Top 5, while the box office was down just over a third from last weekend.

Animation still is the favored genre for audiences as Hanna Barbera’s ‘Tom and Jerry’ join ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ along with the long running hit, ‘The Croods: A New Age’.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (March 12-14, 2021)

  1. ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ – $5.5 million – animated (drop $3.1 million, 36% down)
  2. ‘Tom and Jerry’ – $4.1 million – animated (drop $2.5 million, 38% down)
  3. ‘Chaos Walking’ – $2.2 million – sci-fi (drop $1.6 million, 42% down)
  4. ‘Boogie’ – $730k – drama (drop $470k, 39% down)
  5. ‘The Croods: A New Age’ – $520k – animated (drop $260k, 33% down)

The total for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 comes to $13 million. This marks a 38% decline of $7.9 million from last weekends take of $20.9 million.

In China, the James Cameron sci-fi hit ‘Avatar’ was rereleased where it did well enough to take the mantle of Highest Grossing Film away from Marvel’s ‘Avengers: Endgame’. ‘Avatar’ now has a global total of $2.8 billion, just ahead of ‘Endgame’s $2.7 billion.

The rest of March will be expectedly slow at the box office until the final weekend release of ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ which is expected to do exceptionally well as more theaters begin reopening.

A strong sign of recovery was seen during the Grammy Awards telecast as many studios began promoting theatrical releases for the next few months, including Disney’s ‘Cruella’ starring Emma Stone and Emma Thompson and ‘In the Heights’ from Lin-Manuel Miranda.
