‘Mortal Kombat’ and ‘Demon Slayer’ Boost Weekend Box Office 223%

The Oscars weekend has come to pass and theaters enjoyed a pretty nice weekend in spite of covid capacity restrictions.

‘Mortal Kombat’ took the top spot as expected even with mixed reviews and the fact that the popular video game adaptation does not feature a tournament that the game is famous for, but it does feature plenty of the gore that fans of the game enjoy.

The anime hit ‘Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train’ a.k.a. ‘Kimetsu no Yaiba: Mugen Ressha-Hen’ released stateside to a whopping $19.5 million debut. The film is already the highest grossing film ever in Japan and, with a global total of $407 million, further exemplifies how much American audiences favor animation.

The Weekend Box Office Top 5 is undoubtedly filled with action films, mostly animated fantasy, proving audiences are craving thrills as they return to cinemas.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5

  1. ‘Mortal Kombat’ – $22.5 million – fantasy (debut)
  2. ‘Demon Slayer the Movie: Mugen Train’ – $19.5 million – animated (debut)
  3. ‘Godzilla vs. Kong’ – $4.3 million – fantasy (drop $3.5 million, 45% decline)
  4. ‘Nobody’ – $1.8 million – action (drop $700k, 39% decline)
  5. ‘Raya and the Last Dragon’ – $1.7 million – animated (drop $200k, 11% decline)

The total this week for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 comes to $49.8 million. It is a dominant 223% increase of $34.4 million over last weekends total of $15.4 million.
