So Far: ‘Loki – Episode 3: Lamentis’

by Conan Simmons – June 23, 2021 – 4:33 am

After escaping from the apocalyptic event of last episode Loki (Tom Hiddleston) has pursued the dangerous variant that may or may not be himself back into the realm of the Time Variance Authority.

Lady Loki (Sophia Di Martino), who hates being called a Loki, is after the mysterious Time Keepers to do away with their hold on the multiverse of timelines. Loki on the other hand wants to meet the Time Keepers and usurp their command to ascend to, what he perceives, a sort of cosmic throne.

At odds over their differing goals and fighting each other as Loki struggles to convince Lady Loki to work with him, they are intercepted by Ravonna Renslayer (Gugu Mbatha-Raw) and forced to flee into a random timeline.

Unfortunately for the two Loki’s they land during the planet ending apocalypse of another world, Lamentis-1. Not having enough battery power for their time jumper to operate correctly they very reluctantly begin working together to find a power source. Encountering a human inhabitant of the dying planet they learn of a train heading to a rocket ship that is taking survivors to safety.

The remainder of the episode focuses on their efforts to reach the rocket ship and their bonding along the way.

Lacking the presence of regular characters played by Wunmi Mosaku and Owen Wilson, this episode still carries the happy-go-lucky comedy in the face of impending doom with the series signature witty banter. Tom Hiddleston and Sophie Di Martino make it work wonderfully.

The time hopping scenario concept this show relies on is often reminiscent of the most popular time hopping television show ‘Doctor Who’ and this episode comes the closest yet to mimicking that iconic style.

Plot is revealed gradually keeping interest in the story and characters high. There is definitely a bigger mystery at play than what was shown in previous episodes and, at least for Marvel aficionados, the feeling that a much larger mystery looms behind the scenes. For instance, during the seemingly random montage over the closing credits there is a closeup of what appears to be a statue of the face of Marvel comics celestial character Lord Chaos.

One thing that is definitely revealed in this episode is Lady Loki prefers the name of Sylvie. No spoilers, but if the series keeps accurate to the Marvel comic books there could be a big twist coming.
