After briefly relinquishing the top spot on the Weekend Box Office Top 5 over the four-day Martin Luther King holiday, Marvel’s ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ returned to claim the title from the success of horror film franchise installment ‘Scream’.
The only debut film to break into the Top 5 was the romance ‘Redeeming Love’ which took fourth place. Starring Abigail Cowen (from the series ‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’), Nina Dobrev (from tv’s hit series ‘The Vampire Diaries’) and Famke Janssen (‘GodenEye’ Bond girl turned ‘X-Men’), the film is based on a novel by Francine Rivers, in turn based on a Bible story, updated to take place during the gold rush of 1850’s California. The romance genre has been struggling to make a comeback in theaters, though it has been brewing under the surface during the two-week long, I mean, two-year long pandemic. Perhaps with Valentine’s Day around the corner audiences might turn their favor towards the genre of love?
The rest of the Weekend Box Office Top 5 consists the of the usual holdovers of the animated hit ‘Sing 2’ and the popular action-adventure ‘The King’s Man’, both of which debuted on the Christmas weekend last month.
After the glitch in Spidey’s dominance in theaters last weekend might we see another drop from the top next weekend? Probably not, but there does seem to be more of a chance the weekend after when the sci-fi flick ‘Moonfall’ and the final ‘Jackass 4’ release February 4.
WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (January 21-23, 2022)
- ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ – $14 million – fantasy (drop $10.6 million, 43% down)
- ‘Scream’ – $12.2 million – horror (drop $21.6 million, 64% down)
- ‘Sing 2’ – $5.8 million – animated (drop $4.5 million, 44% down)
- ‘Redeeming Love’ – $3.5 million – romance (debut)
- ‘The King’s Man’ – $1.8 million – action-adventure (drop $800k, 31% down)
Total for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 comes to $37.3 million. This is a $36.7 million drop for a 50% decline from last weekend’s four-day total of $74 million.
