The only change this week from last week on the Weekend Box Office Top 5 are the numbers.
Fewer people went out to the theaters what with the lack of any major new releases and the blizzard hitting the east coast (blizzard as in a weather event, not Blizzard the villain of Iron Man). All of the movies in the top five remain in their respective positions. Even the drop-offs in grosses weren’t necessarily large.
The romance film, ‘Redeeming Love’, dropped 49% in its second weekend which is in line with the average for sophomore weekend drops. ‘Scream’ dropped 41% while still maintaining second place. ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ stayed on top with a 21% drop and animated hit ‘Sing 2’ fell 19%. The smallest drop came for fifth place on the list, the action-adventure flick ‘The King’s Man’, which fell just a smidge at 6%. Overall, the Weekend Box Office Top 5 dropped 29% from last weekend.
The next three weeks should provide opportunity to shake up the box office with the Halle Berry sci-fi flick ‘Moonfall’ releasing February 4 opposite ‘Jackass Forever’. Don’t underestimate the ‘Jackass’ sequel, there’s a reason it’s the fourth theatrical release in the franchise, that reason being the films make money. Whether or not either of those topple the phenomenal web-slinger it will be interesting to see if the scandal-plagued cast of the long-delayed Agatha Christie mystery, ‘Death on the Nile’, featuring Armie Hammer, Letitia Wright, Russell Brand and Gal Gadot can prevent the Liam Neeson star vehicle ‘Blacklight’ from being a winner in theaters on February 11. Those two films will also face off against the romantic comedy ‘Marry Me’ starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson, who replaced Armie Hammer after his cannibal sex fantasy scandal broke. The rom-com is a genre that had a hay day in the 1990’s into the 2000’s but has fallen off over the last decade. At any rate, on February 18 the box office should be guaranteed a new number one winner with the video game adaptation of ‘Uncharted’ starring Spider-Man actor himself, Tom Holland, alongside Mark Wahlberg, Antonio Banderas and Bryan Cranston. ‘Uncharted’ will be going up against the Channing Tatum star vehicle ‘Dog’, a comedy with an uninspired title rivaled by upcoming Michael Bay actioner, ‘Ambulance’. (Seriously, are they just blindly pointing at words in a dictionary to come up with titles now?)
