‘The Batman’ Swoops Up Weekend Box Office

‘The Batman’, as entirely expected, held onto the number one spot in the Weekend Box Office Top 5. The caped crusading dark knight took in a healthy sum of $66 million, well ahead of any other films on the big screen. As per usual for a sophomore weekend, ‘The Batman’ dropped 51% from its debut last weekend, an average decline which, in this case, still keeps the cowled wonder safe from any competition other titles may wish to threaten. ‘The Batman’ stars Robert Pattinson, Zoë Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, Jeffrey Wright and John Turturro and is directed by Matt Reeves.

Finding its way into second spot behind ‘The Batman’ is the video game adaptation ‘Uncharted’, starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg. After a month in theaters, the globetrotting action-adventure flick took in another $9.1 million over the weekend, down an easy 17% from last weekend.

The only debut to make it into the Weekend Box Office Top 5 was the live performance of ‘BTS Permission to Dance on Stage – Seoul: Live Viewing’. Debuting in third place, the concert event made $6.8 million. The Korean pop boy band isn’t the first to have a live performance make an impression in theaters. All the way back in 2014 a live performance of ‘Billy Elliot’ took number one spot in movie theaters in the U.K. and Ireland. BTS is the world’s top K-pop music act, so don’t be surprised if BTS pops up again on theater screens with a live performance that competes with major film releases.

Channing Tatum continues to show star power carrying ‘Dog’, a comedy he both stars in and directs, into fourth spot on the Weekend Box Office Top 5. Digging up another $5.3 million over the last three days, the film has resiliently held on the Top 5 since debuting back on President’s Day weekend.

Sticking seemingly forever onto the Weekend Box Office Top 5, and in fifth place, is the Tom Holland starring Marvel comic book fantasy adventure ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’. Since debuting before Christmas, the film has become one of the highest grossing movies of all time currently with an estimated $1.88 billion. It was the first movie to make more than $100 million on its debut weekend since the global pandemic shut everything down. Only ‘The Batman’ has since rivaled its more than $100 million debut. To compare, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ debuted in December with $253 million whereas ‘The Batman’ debuted with $134 million.

Look for these same films, minus the BTS live performance, again next weekend with ‘The Batman’ continuing its winning streak.

The weekend after next will bring real competition back to cinemas as the action-adventure comedy ‘The Lost City’, starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, gets released March 25. If that doesn’t topple ‘The Batman’ there is always the April release of Marvel horror fantasy ‘Morbius’ just around the corner.
