‘Morbius’, starring Jared Leto as the living vampire, based on the Marvel comic books took first place in theaters over the weekend. ‘Morbius’ didn’t get the best reviews, like the ‘Venom’ films before it. Occupying a sort of MCU adjacent space, ‘Morbius’ did about as well as any non-MCU movie that isn’t Batman.
Making a fair $39.1 million, ‘Morbius’ isn’t close to being a blockbuster. Adding more than $40 million overseas, the film should be able to turn a profit eventually. Not bad for a film that was delayed two years due to the pandemic.
Action comedy ‘The Lost City’ drops from the top spot into second. Starring Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum, the film found $14.8 million at the box office.
‘The Batman’ swoops down to third this week. Starring Robert Pattinson as the caped crusader, the DC comics adaptation is currently the highest grossing film of the year. Making over $700 million worldwide it’s going to be a minute before another film tops it.
Finding itself in fourth place this week is ‘Uncharted’. The videogame adaptation starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg is proving popular with audiences. The movie has been in the Weekend Box Office Top 5 for seven consecutive weeks.
Staying in for three consecutive weeks and rounding out the Weekend Box Office Top 5 is anime film, ‘Jujutsu Kaisen O: The Movie’. As all long-time readers of On Genre know animation is never to be underestimated for box office performance.
