The box office has been stolen by ‘The Bad Guys’!
Animated film ‘The Bad Guys’, starring the voices of Sam Rockwell and Awkwafina, is number one in theaters. Hauling off a tidy sum of $24 million, the film closes the door on ‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’. Like most animated movies, ‘The Bad Guys’ isn’t a breakout success, but it is likely to stick around much like animated good guy ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’.
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ keeps pace in second place after three weeks of release. Starring Jim Carrey as the heavy, the animated/live action hybrid sequel is, like its predecessor, a hit with audiences.
Audiences do love animated films, as any longtime reader of On Genre‘s Weekend Box Office Top 5 reports know. Look for ‘The Bad Guys’ to battle ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ for top spot next weekend.
‘Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore’ is melting fast as the summer blockbuster season gears up. Debuting last weekend with an underwhelming $42 million, the wizards were unable to keep audience interest. Falling 67% and down into third place, this could spell the end on the planned five feature franchise.
Carving out a slice of the box office over the weekend is the Viking saga ‘The Northman’. Directed by Robert Eggers, the film is pleasing fans of the director’s unique style, a style forged in the films of ‘The Witch’ and ‘The Lighthouse’. ‘The Northman’ stars Alexander Skarsgard, Nicole Kidman and Anya Taylor-Joy, whose star began rising after starring in Eggers’ ‘The Witch’. Willem Dafoe, who starred in Eggers’ ‘The Lighthouse’, also appears in ‘The Northman’ along with Ethan Hawke, Nicol Kidman and Bjork.
‘The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent’ was able to lift itself into a fifth spot debut. The comedy stars Nicolas Cage as himself alongside Pedro Pascal.
