The second weekend for Marvel’s ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ brought the sorcerer back down to Earth.
Dropping 67% from opening weekend debut of $187.4 million, the superhero sequel conjured up $61.8 million Friday thru Sunday. That is on the high end for second weekend drops. It is, however, just shy of the 68% drop ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ encountered in its second weekend.
Rounding up the middle of the Weekend Box Office Top 5 are a pair of holdover animated pics. ‘The Bad Guys’ stays just ahead of ‘Sonic the Hedgehog 2’ as the audience favorites take second and third, respectively.
Showing up to compete against ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ is ‘Firestarter’ which debuted to barely a flicker. The latest Stephen King adaptation is suffering from poor reviews and being a day-and-date release on streaming service Peacock.
Multiple realities seem all the rage right now as ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’ stays in the Top 5. Starring international superstar Michelle Yeoh, the fantasy comedy is holding strong dropping a mere 6% from last weekend.
Next weekend will jostle things out a tad with the release of ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’. The melodrama has been popular since the tv series debuted in 2010. Even before the first theatrical movie in 2019, the title made its way into the Marvel Cinematic Universe appearing on a screen in 2013’s ‘Iron Man 3’.
While ‘Downton Abbey: A New Era’ isn’t expected to hit the top spot, another upcoming title is. It is widely expected that Memorial Day weekend will see ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ shoot down ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. It will be interesting to see how well a war movie does in theaters. The genre doesn’t usually get the big studio push that ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is receiving.
