‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ Stays Ahead ‘Lightyear’

Chris Pratt in 'Jurassic World: Dominion'

With competition heating up the summer box office, Chris Pratt and his dinosaurs of ‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ managed to stay ahead of ‘Lightyear’.

‘Lightyear’, the animated spinoff of the ‘Toy Story’ films, stars Chris Evans as the space faring hero. Raking in $51 million on its debut, the intake most likely suffered from overexposed press regarding a same sex kissing scene. If the film offers anything else, the press leading up to release never indicated. The kissing scene reportedly got the film banned in nearly 14 countries.

‘Jurassic World: Dominion’ fell 59% sophomore weekend. Digging up a total of $58.7 million it was a close race with Pixar’s latest animated outing. The dinosaur franchise is expected to fall next weekend as Baz Luhrmann’s musical biopic ‘Elvis’ hits the silver screens.

Keeping pace, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ dropped a mere 12% from last weekend taking up $44 million. Tom Cruise is enjoying the biggest hit of his career. The war film is finding support among its audience for a possible Oscars run later this year. It may even stay near the top of the Top 5 next weekend.

Marvel superheroes continue to hold sway.

‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’ keeps Marvel in mind for audiences prior to next month’s installment. July 8 will see ‘Thor: Love & Thunder’ hit screens on a likely dominance of theater box office next month. The Doctor Strange flick is expected to transcend onto Disney+ streaming in July bringing its theatrical run to an end.

Animation still is the quiet dominant force in theaters.

‘The Bob’s Burgers Movie’ cooks up a fifth-place finish. With $1.1 million on the grill, the animated flick dropped 52% from last weekend.
