It was a close call in theaters but animated film ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ managed to outperform sci-fi thriller ‘Nope’ for top spot.
Featuring the voices of Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Kevin Hart, ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ is the animated tale focusing on the pets of superheroes. Based on characters from DC comics it’s no surprise the movie did well with audiences. Debuting with $23 million keeps it from being a breakout hit, yet good enough to reach number one.
Last weekend’s winner, Jordan Peele’s ‘Nope’, dropped 58% down into second place. The science fiction horror flick may be able to stick around in the Weekend Box Office Top 5 for a few more weeks. Only ‘Bullet Train’, starring Brad Pitt, remains as a sure-fire winner yet to be released. After that it’s the summer dumping ground until late September when awards season heats up.
Holdovers fill out the remainder of the Weekend Box Office Top 5.
Marvel flick ‘Thor: Love and Thunder’ strikes into third with $13.2 million. It will likely go to streaming next month on Disney+ after the MCU series ‘She-Hulk: Attorney at Law’ streams in the coming weeks. The next Marvel adventure to hit big screens is ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ due for release November 11. It is unknown who will be playing the title character or if the character will even appear since original actor Chadwick Boseman passed away in 2019. What is known is the character of Namor, the Sub-Mariner will be heavily featured with actor Tenoch Huerta in the role. There is also rumor that the villainous Dr. Doom will make an appearance.
Ever the popular genre animation holds two spots on the Top 5.
‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ settles down into fourth with $11 million. It could be a dogfight next weekend between the animated favorites and high-flying phenomenon ‘Top Gun: Maverick’. The war movie starring Tom Cruise is the biggest hit of the year. And after 10 weeks in theaters it is one of the highest grossing films of all time.
Will ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ be grounded from the Weekend Box Office Top 5 next week or will ‘Minions: The Rise of Gru’ finally fall down?
