‘The Invitation’ to the Top of the Weekend Box Office Top 5

The Invitation 2022 horror movie

A deadly slow weekend at the box office may be ironically fitting for vampire flick ‘The Invitation’ to take the top spot. Not with much though. The romantic vampire film sucked up only $6.8 million. Still, it was enough to put a stake in the competition.

‘The Invitation’ was just over a million more than ‘Bullet Train’. Starring Brad Pitt, ‘Bullet Train’ bounced back into second while falling 30% from last weekend.

Rolling over into third on the Weekend Box Office Top 5, ‘Beast’ starring Idris Elba. Dropping 58% in its sophomore weekend it holds on by a claw ahead of two other holdovers.

The box office phenomena ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ continues soaring along in the Weekend Box Office Top 5. Dropping 20% in its 14th weekend, of which the Tom Cruise starrer has enjoyed 13 weeks in the Weekend Box Office Top 5, the movie continues to dominate the year in cinema. Impressive, as the war film is now available to view streaming at home.

Just barely a smidge behind ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ is last weekend’s winner, the animated ‘Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero’. Falling a whopping 77% from its debut last weekend, it’s hard to tell if the popular animated flick will stick around this coming weekend.

For the next month it will be a free for all at the box office.

National Cinema Day is September 3, where all movie tickets will be $3. This should goose the numbers for movies like ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ over the four-day Labor Day holiday.

There is also the chance that a costumed crime fighter may stick back into the Weekend Box Office Top 5.

Sony is planning to rerelease their Marvel hit ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’ over the weekend. As the MCU remains the undisputed winner at theaters, fans may make it a hit once again as they eagerly await the next MCU installment, ‘Black Panther: Wakanda Forever’ in November.

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (August 26 – 28, 2022)
