‘Barbarian’ Overtakes Weekend Box Office Top 5

Georgina Campbell in 'Barbarian'

Summer’s penultimate weekend. As the heat simmers down so does the box office. Newcomer ‘Barbarian’, a horror flick starring Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long, easily conquered with a mere $10 million.

Has Hollywood given up?

The short-term makes it seem like it.

‘Barbarian’ was able to take top spot on the Weekend Box Office Top 5 by relying heavily on word of mouth. Advertising seemed nil for the most part.

Likewise, in second place is Bollywood feature ‘Brahmastra Part One: Shiva’. A fantasy adventure playing on only 810 screens across the U.S. The film was able to muster $4.4 million, enough to pull ahead of holdover ‘Bullet Train’.

The Brad Pitt action flick ‘Bullet Train’ chugged into third with $3.3 million, taking point from Tom Cruise war adventure ‘Top Gun: Maverick’, which flew in with $3.2 million.

Rounding out the Weekend Box Office Top 5 is animated ‘DC League of Super-Pets’ dragging its leash to bite into $2.8 million.

One more lazy summer weekend ahead before a quietly slow start to autumn. Will awards season kick out the jams for the last quarter of the year?

Best to temper expectations.
