‘The Lost City’ Finds Top Spot at Box Office

The Lost City

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum continue to show the strength of star power as ‘The Lost City’ wins the Weekend Box Office Top 5. The comedy adventure also features Daniel Radcliffe as the main villain and Brad Pitt. On Genre expected it to perform well and it’s no surprise it took the top spot with $30.5 million.

‘The Batman’ starring Robert Pattinson, which had been number one for the past three weeks, falls to second place. The superhero film still did well, pulling in $20.5 million and will undoubtedly be sticking around another week or two.

The big surprise, in theaters at least, over the weekend is the Indian film ‘RRR’ debuting in third. ‘RRR’ stands for ‘Roudram Ranam Rudhiram’. At a length of over three hours, ‘RRR’ takes place in the 1920’s and its success is a rarity not only for Indian films in the U.S. but also for historical movies. The historical genre hasn’t been enjoying much favor at theaters lately with films such as ‘The Last Duel’ doing particularly poorly.

Tom Holland starrer ‘Uncharted’, based on the popular videogame, continues to play well with audiences. Also starring Mark Wahlberg and Antonio Banderas, ‘Uncharted’ is likely to drop off the list next weekend. Audiences must really be craving to lose themselves in escapist fare on the big screen with both ‘The Lost City’ and ‘Uncharted’ doing well.

Last weekend’s surprise, the animated ‘Jujutsu Kaisen O: The Movie’, dropped from its debut in second place down to fifth.

Look for the Sony/Marvel comic book movie ‘Morbius’, starring Jared Leto, to topple ‘The Lost City’ next weekend. It’s not guaranteed to win but when was the last time a Marvel movie didn’t debut in the top spot?

WEEKEND BOX OFFICE TOP 5 (March 25-27, 2022)
  1. ‘The Lost City’ – $30.5 million – comedy (debut)
  2. ‘The Batman’ – $20.5 million – fantasy (drop $16.2 million, 44% down)
  3. ‘RRR’ – $9.5 million – historical (debut)
  4. ‘Uncharted’ – $5 million – action-adventure (drop $2.8 million, 36% down)
  5. ‘Jujutsu Kaisen O: The Movie’ – $4.6 million – animated (drop $10.2 million, 69%)

Total for the Weekend Box Office Top 5 comes to $70.1 million. This is an increase of merely 4%, for a gain of $2.4 million over last weekend’s total of $67.7 million.
